596 homes for rent in Markham

Markham is the largest municipality in York Region and one of the most diverse cities in Canada, with a majority of residents reporting a mother tongue other than English and very large Chinese and South Asian communities. It is also the region's employment centre: the corridor along Highway 404 and Highway 7 holds a concentration of technology and corporate offices that gives Markham a daytime population most suburbs do not have. Unionville's preserved Main Street and Markham Village sit alongside Cornell, Berczy, Cathedraltown and the towers going up at Markham Centre.

This is the most balanced housing market in the farm, and that is the thing worth knowing about it. Detached houses are only about a third of what is for sale, condominium apartments nearly a quarter, and townhouses a sixth — a genuine spread rather than a detached market with a few apartments attached. Markham also has one of the largest rental markets in York Region, with leases making up a substantial share of all active listings. For a buyer that means the question here is which form of housing, not just which street.

Two practical points. Markham is served by two GO lines — Stouffville and Richmond Hill — plus the Highway 7 bus rapidway, and a property's position relative to those is a real part of its value. And the city is big enough and old enough that its neighbourhoods were built in distinct eras: a 1970s house in Thornhill, a 1990s one in Unionville and a new one in Cornell are three different purchases with three different maintenance horizons, and "Markham" as a single figure describes none of them.
